The Professional team at Bigbury is amongst the strongest in the West Region. The welfare of our Juniors is given the upmost importance. All staff and volunteers who work with our Juniors have attended the necessary and required Safeguarding and Time to Listen (TtL) courses and all are DBS checked and cleared. We are one of only 4 Clubs in Devon that are GolfMark accredited. Part of achieving this prestigious award is proving all the relevant policies, safeguarding, Welfare Officers, organisers and support is in place for young people. We also have the Safegolf and Clubmark accolade; again proving we are one the the best qualified Clubs to introduce a Junior into the game.
We aim to have fun. We have group training sessions on a Saturday morning and a mid-week after school group. We also take the Juniors out on the course for some short game practice, with the emphasis being have fun and enjoy. Once our Juniors gain a handicap there are then competitions and inter-club matches that they can take part in.
We are also part of the Golf Access programme which is a great way for someone of any age to get into golf with certificates and wrist bands which are achieved once you pass each individual level.
All the information including etiquette, rules, technique and golf knowledge that a young golfer needs to get started properly are covered in a fun and easy to understand way.
There is a strong family ethos here at Bigbury and we encourage non golfing parents to bring their children to the Club. The organisation of the junior section is handled jointly by a number of parents and our Resident Professional - Adam.
Ivybridge Community College, Kingsbridge Community College along with several local Primary Schools use our course for their training sessions and matches. Several scratch golfers have come through this system and a fine standard of golf is often on view.
Golf is wonderful game for life and the earlier you start the better. We had a 5 year old who hit the ball consistently straight and well over a 100 yards. It teaches discipline, self control, etiquette and sportsmanship, playing with people of different ages and abilities, coping with dissappointments and builds confidence and self esteem in young people.
The juniors have many of their own competitions and matches but are also encouraged to play in all the main Club competitions once they reach a 28 handicap standard for boys and 36 for girls.
Every level of Junior golfer will receive the warmest welcome at Bigbury. We take welfare with health & safety seriously, all coaches, organisors and helpers hold current DBS (was CRB) certificates.
